The most important Chevrolet yet. New Cruze is based on the next-generation Vauxhall Astra but offers a big car feel for a small car price, kicking off at just 11,545. New 2.0-litre diesels available too, but best-seller is likely to be the 1.8-litre petrol tested here.

Uninspiring looks
Only available in saloon form at the moment. Hatch due in 2010
Lacklustre 139bhp 1.8 needs lots of revs and sounds coarse
Don't expect much more than 35mpg combined
Sloping roofline encroaches on rear headroom
Cabin quality is average with too much grey plastic
Doubts over residuals
Road Test Rating It's by no means revolutionary but the Cruze is by far the best Chevrolet yet. It's good to drive and well equipped in LT form. The 1.8 offers poor performance though and the saloon body is just not practical enough. Perhaps the hatchback version will be the car that finally breaks through
